Jackson Oliver Shuford, Jr.

Atlanta, GA - Jack Shuford passed away peacefully at home in Atlanta, GA surrounded by the love and prayers of his family on November 5, 2018, at the age of 90. He was born in Atlanta, GA, February 9, 1928 to Alice Ross Shuford and Jackson Oliver Shuford, Sr. Jack served in the Military in the late 1940's then began working in insurance to support himself during his college years. During that time, he served on the board of directors for a local NBC affiliate, WLBT-TV. In addition to hiring the first black network affiliated TV manager in the U.S, the station received a Peabody award in 1976 for its Probe-investigative documentary program. These were among Jack's proudest accomplishments.

Jack was an excellent chef and enjoyed entertaining with his culinary creations. He loved sailing, delighted in nature and his passion for life was remarkable. He never met a stranger and truly enjoyed getting to know everyone who crossed his path. Jack was a wonderful man, was well-loved, and was known for his captivating stories.

I had the great pleasure to meet Jack. Cindy is my long time friend from when we lived in Oakton V.A. In 2013 we moved to Atlanta..there I was able to see him when Cindy would come to visit. I was able to experience his warm and special ways with people. I believe it when you say "He never met a sranger". He and Sandy always made me feel welcomed. He's an accomplished man. I read all his memoirs and marvel at his clarity of events and situations. I know he will be missed and pray that you find comfort with your family and friends . Lovingly, Diana Torrell

Your dad and I worked together at Operation Shoestring and had many board meetings in his office on North State Street. Shoestring celebrated 50 years this year. Jack would be proud. He was a fine man and an asset to the Jackson community. Spencer and I send our love and condolences.

Stephanie, Jeff and family... so sorry for your loss. Though I never met your Dad I know he had to be a caring, loving, full of life person, just because you are his fruit and have these characteristics and so many more.
May God continue to give you peace through your sorrow.
Love you my friend.

We were so blessed to have such a great daddy. I'm very grateful to be able to work with my four sisters; Cindy Lundy, Cassie Shuford, Joyce Ratliff, and Angel Thomas Bumpers, to co-labor in writing his obituary. He was an Eagle Scout, too, and led a troop of underprivileged kids. We all received a copy of his memoirs compiled by my daughter-in-law, Katie Shuford, of emails and stories he shared with his children and grandchildren over the years. So many stories! So many great life lessons learned.
So much love!
We miss you, daddy!
