Brandon - Gertrude Alcorn Russell Sigmon, 89, passed away on September 11, 2018 at Peach Tree Village in Brandon, MS.

Born in Jonestown, MS, she was a graduate of Clarksdale High School where she was a Wildcat cheerleader and advanced to the state championship tennis team mixed doubles. After attending Holton-Arms School in Washington, D.C., she and her husband, Marvin F. Sigmon, Jr., moved to Sherard, MS. They founded Sigmon Farms, which they owned and operated together for 57 years until his death in 2006.

A lifelong member of St. George's Episcopal Church, Mrs. Sigmon taught Sunday school. She was a member of the Altar Guild, Episcopal Church Women, St. George's Chapter of Daughters of the King, and founded the Jr. Chapter of Daughters of the King. She served as Diocesan Director of the Episcopal Youth.

Devoting much of her time to community service, she volunteered with the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, St. George's Day School, and Lee Academy. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, an avid gardener, and loved dancing and collecting antiques.

Mrs.Sigmon was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Festus Sigmon, Jr.; son, Marvin Festus Sigmon, III; two brothers, Glover Alcorn Russell and Thomas Logan Russell and her parents; Marie Antoinette Hodgkins Russell and David Moor Russell.

Survivors include her two daughters, Gertrude "Trudy" Sigmon McLaurin (Sidney) of Brandon and Valerie Sigmon Brahan (Tom) of Aberdeen; six grandchildren, Sidney Lee McLaurin, Jr., Olivia McLaurin McCay (Brent), Wallace Sigmon McLaurin (Kelty), David Rivers Brahan, Amelia Glover Brahan, Elizabeth Neill Brahan; and three great-grandchildren, Adalyn Claire McCay, Jackson Thomas McCay, Wallace Sigmon McLaurin, Jr.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

With tremendous gratitude, the family would like to thank the staff of Peach Tree Village and Hospice Compassus Care for their love, compassion, and devotion.

The service is scheduled for Saturday, September 15, at 2:00 p.m. at St. George's Episcopal Church in Clarksdale with a reception to follow in the church's Parish Hall.

Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale is handling the arrangements.
