John Price Burton Obituary
John Price Burton

Brookhaven - Before you take action, John Burton would remind you "measure twice, cut once." John took this methodical approach to every facet of his life. Whether that penchant for detail was used preparing his Airstream for a western adventure or encouraging his grandchildren to pursue their dreams, his actions were always thoughtful and exact.

John Price Burton, affectionately known as "Poppie" passed away peacefully in the arms of his beloved wife Kay on June 8, 2018, surrounded by his three adoring daughters at their residence in Brookhaven, Mississippi.

John was raised in Jackson, Mississippi and graduated from Wingfield High School in 1971. He then went on to complete a Bachelor's degree from Belhaven University. After his education, he began a long and successful career with Farm Bureau Insurance, achieving the professional designations of Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC).

John retired in March of 2018 as the Associate State Sales Manager of Mississippi Farm Bureau, where he faithfully served for over 42 years. Though his successful Farm Bureau career brought him great joy and life-long relationships, John's treasures were his wife, daughters-their spouses-and his nine grandchildren.

One would scarcely find a man more dedicated to his family. As a young man, John took Kay to be his wife promising to protect and provide that promise was fulfilled repeatedly as John and Kay travelled the country and the world, fostering their adoration for each other and love for adventure. Sharing time and experiences together was John's recipe for a rich family life, leaving behind a legacy of faith and family first for generations to follow.

John had a deep faith that began when he accepted Christ at a Billy Graham crusade as a young man in Jackson, MS. Faith set the backdrop for all of his life goals and achievements. Though in his final days he fought illness, he did so with great courage. It could be said with absolute confidence "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. (2 Tim 4:7)" He is survived by a wife, Lela Kay Krone Burton formally of Jackson, now of Brookhaven; three daughters, Shelly Cloud and husband Jonathan, Amanda Vaughan and husband Bo, Emily Waterloo and husband Trey; as well as nine grandchildren, Hannah Cloud, Bennett Cloud, Allie Rose Cloud, Rosalie Vaughan, Marshall Vaughan, MaryRhea Waterloo, Evelyn Waterloo, Lela Beth Waterloo, and Polly Jane Waterloo.

In lieu of flowers, John asked that remembrances take the form of contributions to the Brookhaven Little Theatre, P.O. Box 943, Brookhaven, MS 39602 or First Baptist Church, 200 East Monticello Street, Brookhaven, MS 39601.
