West Point - Mrs. Mary Horn Lester, 85, passed away on September 9, 2018, at The Village at Germantown in Germantown, TN. Mary was born in Raleigh, MS on August 10, 1933. She was the daughter of the late J.B. and Minnie Bruce Horn. Mary graduated from Raleigh High School where she lettered in basketball and participated in other sports and various clubs. After graduation, Mary moved to Jackson, MS where she met the love of her life, John Lester. Mary and John were united in marriage at her home in Raleigh, MS on May 2, 1959 and were joyfully married for 58 years until John's passing on November 19, 2017. In 1969, Mary and John moved their family to West Point, MS for John to begin his career as a State Farm Insurance agent. Mary attended and graduated from Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus in 1973, where she obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Education. She was an Elementary School Teacher at Oak Hill Academy in West Point for 25 years, teaching from grades 1 through 5. During her time at Oak Hill Academy, both she and John volunteered much of their time to the school and were avid fans of the Raiders, where both of their sons excelled in sports. She enjoyed walking, fishing, and vegetable gardening. Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She truly loved her family, and they were always her first priority. Survivors include her two sons: Monty Lester (Connie) of Collierville, Tennessee and Lance Lester (Melissa) of Nashville, Tennessee; three grandchildren: Tyler Lester of Collierville, Tennessee, Courtney Gober (Kenny) of Nashville, Tennessee and Colt Lester of Nashville, Tennessee; a great grandchild: Maddox Gober of Nashville, Tennessee; three sisters: Nina Hawkins of Atlanta, Georgia, Laura Simanskey of Venice, Florida, and Minnie Merle Boykin of Raleigh, Mississippi, a sister-in-law: Mae Horn of Jackson, Mississippi; two brothers-in-law: David Lester (Shirley) of Jacksonville, Florida and George Lester (Shirley) of Madison,Mississippi; a number of nieces and nephews; and her very special family friends and caregivers: Catina Walker, Latonia "CheChe" Orr, and Shelia Brown, all from West Point. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by a sister and brother: Alowayne Dowdle and John Benjamin Horn, Jr.. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in West Point with Reverend Darian Duckworth officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service on Saturday, from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in West Point. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements. Pallbearers will be Jamey Ballard, John Cherney, Dwyane Daniels, Tommy Henley, Brook Lester, and Tyler Lester.
