Royce Von Baker Obituary
Royce Von Baker

Brandon - Royce Von Baker, 79, of Brandon, died peacefully at his home Wednesday morning, September 12, 2018, after a long illness. The funeral service will be Friday at 10 am at Oakdale Baptist Church in Brandon.

Mr. Baker was preceded in death by his parents, Von and Sadie Baker, brothers Benny and Billy Don Baker, and grandson Hunter Baker. He is survived by his wife, Melva Steen Baker; son Steve Baker and wife Tara; son Corey Baker and wife Stephanie; grandchildren Ty Baker, Audrey Baker, Peyton Sharplin and Ashley Sharplin and 5 great-grandchildren; sisters Joan Blakeney, and Yvonne Warren and husband Paul. Between nieces, nephews and cousins, his extended family is too large to list. Truthfully, he was kin to, or friends with, or known by, most old timers from the Brandon area. Royce was a smart man, who shared his informed opinion with anyone who would listen. He loved hunting and being outdoors, and was passionate about flowers and gardening. And of course, any opportunity to talk and socialize was not to be missed.

After graduating from Brandon High School, Hinds Community College and Mississippi College, he and Benny served together in the National Guard, 113th MP unit in Brandon. Mr. Baker was a Brandon city clerk, accountant for Rankin County Schools and later, mayor of Brandon from 1977 to 1981. He was instrumental in 16th Section reform and securing funds and property for the construction of the Brandon library. A founding member of the Brandon Volunteer Fire Department, Royce was dedicated to the community, investing his time and resources in the Brandon Historical Society and numerous civic organizations. His professional career included owning several businesses, such as Baker Real Estate and Appraisals, the Baker Lane store at the corner and Fannin Landfill, often with brother Benny by his side. For his entire 79 years, he attended Oakdale Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, Sunday school director, and sang in the choir.

Pallbearers will be Ty Baker, Don Purvis, Tommy Steen, Freddie Dunlap, Darren Warren, and Peyton Sharplin. Honorary pallbearers are the members of Alvin Martin's Sunday School class at Oakdale Baptist Church. The Baker family requests that any memorials be made to Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital in honor of Hunter Baker. Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to Jackson Oncology staff, Dr. Bobby Graham and Stay Home Hospice for the exceptional care given during his illness.
