Toby Majure


James Torrey (Toby) Majure, 88, died peacefully at Hospice Ministries, Inc in Ridgeland, MS on March 29, 2013. He was born September 13, 1924 in Newton, MS to the late Carrie Cross and Robert Stanley Majure.

Toby was a Navy veteran of World War II. After serving three years in the Pacific theatre, he received a letter of commendation from the Secretary of the Navy for outstanding performance of duty as a member of a boat crew attached to a U.S. naval vessel during the assault on and occupation of Tarawa, Gilbert Islands. Toby attended Officer's Training School at Princeton University and SMU, and was a graduate of the University of Mississippi, where he played football with Charlie Conerly.

Following graduation from Ole Miss, Toby joined the sales department at Mississippi School Supply Company, where he was based in Tupelo for 13 years. In 1960 he moved to Jackson where he served as President of General Equipment / Sheldon Manufacturers, Inc. until his retirement.

He was a member of the Crystal Springs and Jackson Chamber of Commerce, President of the Mississippi Manufacturers Association, and a past president of the Metropolitan Jackson Boy's Club. An avid golfer, Toby was also a member of the Board of Directors at the Country Club Of Jackson. Upon retirement, Toby was renown around town for shooting golf below his age on a regular basis. One of his fondest golf memories was playing Augusta National, where he had a birdie on the par 3, number 6.

Toby served as a lifetime deacon at First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School in the junior department for over 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, the former Myrtle James of Newton, and their three daughters Janie Peet Thompson, Thea Majure, and Jenny Majure Markow. Grandfather to John Peet, III, Mark and Majure Markow, and two Great Grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at First Baptist Church, Jackson, on Monday April 1, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice Ministries, Inc Ridgeland or to the .
