Major General Carey A. Randall, 95, died Saturday, April 26, 2008, at Regency Hospital/St. Dominic Hospital.
General Randall was born November 15, 1912 in Gloster, MS. He attended the University of Mississippi at age 16 for 1 year. He then entered LSU from which he graduated in 1934 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. After a year of post- graduate work at LSU, during wich he completed the advanced ROTC Course, he was commissioned as a Marine second lieutenant July 10, 1935.
He served in China with the Fourth Marine Regiment at Shanghai and the American Embassy Detachment in Peking. He served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He was aboard the USS Enterprise at Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. In addtional to the battles of Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima, he participated in the Battle of Midway in June 1942.
He was married in Shanghai, China in 1937 to his childhood sweetheart, Mary Pearle Appleby. He affectionately called her "Apple" because she was the "apple of his eye".
Serving under 2 presidents in Washington, Truman and Eisenhower, he was named Military Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense in 1950 and in 1951. After the resignation of General Marshall and the appointment of Secretary Lovett, he was named to the position of Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense. In addition he served during much of the time as Secretary of the Armed Forces Policy Council.
Following retirement in 1960, General Randall entered the Law School of the University of Miami at Coral Gables where he graduated with honors in 1963. During the time he was at the University of Miami he served as both the Executive Editor and Editor in Chief of the University of Miami Law Review. He was the managing partner of Walton Lantaff Schroeder and Carson.
He is preceded in death by his father, Mack Allen Randall; his mother, Mary Etta (Denson) Randall; and his wife of 63 years, Mary Pearle (Apple) Randall.
He is survived by his nieces, Rita Martinson, Mary Portera, Patricia Reeb, and Kathryn Clark and numerous grand nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his friend and housekeeper, Mary Ransom, his beloved poodle, Nikki, and his dear friends, Kim and Don Massey.
There will be a private burial at the Military Cemetary in Natchez, MS without a ceremony. At the request of The General, there will be no visitation.
