Charlestine Bennette Thomas or "Charlie" as she was affectionately known, was born in Shelby, Mississippi on June 6, 1964 to Bennie and Earnestine Thomas. Though born in Mississippi, she lived most of her life in Los Angeles, California, with the last 10 years living in Georgia. Throughout Charlie's life, she was a joyful and giving person, always bringing a smile to others, and seeking to help those in need. She was a member of the Church of God in Christ, and sought to please God in all that she did. Charlie also was a gifted singer, and had a passion for music and the arts. She excelled in school, receiving her diploma at Long Beach Jordan High School, a bachelor's degree in Theater Arts from California State Dominguez Hills University, a master's degree in Education from Pepperdine University, and was one dissertation away from receiving her doctorate's degree at Walden University.
Charlie was passionate about education, and believed it was vital for individual empowerment and success. She became a teacher and taught many years in California and in Georgia; her last two teaching assignments in Georgia included Smiley and Dunbar Elementary. Charlie also started a charity organization called Hodari Hope, geared towards helping inner city youth by way of academic enhancements, the arts and mentoring. Charlie's passion to make a difference in the lives of others will both be remembered and truly missed. Charlie, you were a daughter, a mom, a sister, a friend, a leader, a gift who made our world more wonderful.
Charlestine leaves behind the following people to cherish her memory: Mother, Earnestine Thomas, three sons, Jelani, Johari, and Jasiri Hutchinson; two brothers, Bennie and Barry Thomas; one sister Crysta Cook, one niece Sarai Cook; two aunts, Evelyn Thomas, and Jocelyn Hancock and other extended family.
