John I. Culp of Midway, Ga., died Aug. 2, 2018. He was 76. Culp was born Dec. 8, 1941, in Pineville, N.C., to Richard Sylvester Culp and Mary Edna (Short) Culp. Culp served in the U.S. Army for 23 years, retiring as a Sgt. 1st Class in 1986. After his military retirement, he attended St. Leo College and graduated magnum cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Later, he drove the military hospital bus between Fort Stewart, Ga., and Fort Gordon, Ga., for two years where he made many lasting friendships. From there he attended Correctional Officer Training School and began working as a Corrections Officer at the Georgia Coastal Correctional Facility in Pooler, Ga. He worked there for 15 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Sylvester Culp and Mary Edna (Short) Culp, and his siblings: Richard Culp; the Rev. Dr. James Culp; Emma Washington; David Culp; Carrie Broome; George Culp; Fred Culp; Israel Culp; and the Rev. Monroe Culp.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 55 years, Betty Ann Dowell Culp, and his children, Zena Mae Culp of Woodbridge, Va, Valerie Juanita Culp Morris (Carlos) of Dumfries, Va., Cyrus Christopher Culp of Manassas, Va., and Angelique Benita Culp Craig (Fredrick) of Montclair, Va.; his grandchildren, Brandon Morris and Jordan Morris of Dumfries, Va.; his sister, Edna Culp Washington of Charlotte, N.C.; his sisters-in-law, Osie Culp of Charlotte, N.C., Luvenia Smith of Charlotte, N.C., and Susie Portlock of Charlotte, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
The viewing is 1-5 p.m. Aug. 9 at Dorchester Funeral Home, 7842 E Oglethorpe Hwy, Midway, GA.
A wake will be held from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Big Pineville AME Zion Church, 10562 Providence Road W, Charlotte, NC.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. at the Big Pineville AME Zion Church.
Repast immediately following the service. Burial is noon Aug. 13 at Quantico National Cemetery, 18424 Joplin Road, Triangle, VA.
