Ronald Austin, 76, of Riceboro transitioned on Monday, April 23, 2018, in his daughter's home from lung cancer. In hospice care for six months prior to his death, Ronald died peacefully, surrounded by his immediate family.
Born on Oct. 24, 1941, in Riceboro to the late Robert Sr. and Eldora (West) Austin, Ronald left home at the age of 17 and settled in Hartford, CT, where he spent most of his adult life, working and raising his family. He held several jobs throughout his work life, beginning as a lead supervisor for Nassau Furniture and retiring in 2007 as a machinist with Chromalloy Gas Turbine.
He was a proud member of Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Ohio, Pride of Valley Lodge #95 in Cincinnati.
Ronald had a huge heart and many interests, and was best known for his love of gardening, grilling and fishing. He spent many hours outdoors working in his garden and yard and unselfishly shared the produce with family, neighbors and friends.
During family get-togethers, he took pride in watching others enjoy his ribs and other grilled meats. Ronald was also fond of scratch off tickets and playing the lottery.
A devoted husband, he took great care of his wife, Dorothy "Dot Jo" of 54 years. He passed his love of music, travel, history and reading to his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife: Dorothy Jo (Campbell) Austin of Riceboro; three daughters, Regina Andriette (Llewellyn) Anderson of East Hartford, CT, Donna Teresa Jeffries of Eastampton, NJ, and Lynda Jean (Jessie) Smith of Johns Creek; 11 grandchildren, LaKecia, Ronald and Chante Anderson of East Hartford, Amber, Chelsea, Mya and Jason Jeffries of Eastampton, and Jonne, Jaran, Jayce and Jayden Smith of Johns Creek; two great-grandchildren, Aubree Anderson and Easton Parker; eight siblings, Robert Jr., (Maxine) Austin of Windsor, CT, William (Charmayne) Austin of Riceboro, Brenda Austin of Hinesville, Betty (Clarence) McCray of Hinesville, Helen Austin of Riceboro, Carl (Barbara) Austin of East Hartford, Norman (Erline) Austin of Hartford and Craig Austin of Denver, CO; and a host of relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 28, the Dorchester Funeral Home, 7842 E. Oglethorpe Highway, Midway. A viewing is set to start at noon until the service begins. Immediately following services, a repast will be held at 155 Treesa Hill Road, Riceboro.
Floral arrangements will be handled by Stacy's Florist of Hinesville. In honor of his passion for scratch offs the family will have a tree available for those who would like to hang a lottery ticket.
