Obituary

Delia Garcia (78) passed away at home on March 18, 2019, surrounded by her family in Thornton, Colorado. She will be remembered for championing the importance of education and her loving, generous spirit. Born in New Mexico in 1940 to Fernando and Josefita Aguilar, Delia grew up in Rocky Ford, Colorado and graduated from the University of Northern Colorado (BA, '63, MA, '76). She met her husband Charles Garcia when he fixed her flat tire at Otero Junior College. They married in 1964 and eventually settled in Thornton. Her 27-year career in Adams 12 Five Star Schools began as a Bilingual Resource Teacher, and included roles as Director of Bilingual Education, Multicultural Education instructor, and classroom teacher at Thornton Elementary, Horizon High, Thornton Middle, and Wyco Elementary. She retired in 2001. She was a member of the National and Colorado Education Associations, District 12 Educators' Association, and an officer of ADK sorority, the International Honorary Organization for Women Educators. A longtime congregant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Northglenn, Delia taught confirmation and catechism classes, and served as a Eucharistic Minister and food bank volunteer. Delia also worked as a campaign volunteer in Democratic politics and as an election judge. She loved to read, shop, travel, and spend time with her grandchildren. She was an ardent fan and season ticket holder of the Denver Broncos. She is survived by her husband Charles; children Carla (Jorge Sieira) Garcia, Charles (Theresa) Garcia, and Chris Aguilar-Garcia, grandchildren Nicholas and Adriana Gonzales, and Aurelia and Mia Garcia, as well as siblings and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
