Blessings and peace to the Groom family. I will remember Winston Groom as a fun, storytelling, big smiling, eyes twinkling, taller than an oak, Southern gentleman. He was always accommodating and always smiling. He could weave a basket full of tales and was beyond brilliant. I'm sure he's bending God's ear, and well "that's all I got to say about that."

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Groom. His Mother, Mrs. Ruth K. Groom taught English and Creative Writing classes at Murphy High School and it was fortunate to be in her class in 1966. Mr. Groom shared her wonderful smile and sense of humor. He will be missed by many.

My deepest sympathy to the Groom family. My heart is filled with treasured memories of Winston and his time at Bobby Vans Bridgehampton NY. Willie Morris and Adam Shaw told Bobby and I that we were going to love him and when he arrived he didn’t disappoint . Night after night Winston and Bobby discussed Vietnam, They were both just recovering from their experience serving. Also much laughter, discussions with the great writers . Irwin Shaw. Willie Morris, Jim Jones and Bud Schulberg. I have tears in my eyes recalling those days . My hope is that they are all together.

I have such fond memories of Winston as a fellow member of the George Washington University Rugby Club during the 1970's and holding forth with him at the bar of F. Scott's in Georgetown. I am so sorry our paths never crossed again after he moved to New York to launch his literary career. Rest in peace, my friend. The world will be a sadder place without you. My heartfelt condolences to your family.

My heartfelt sorrow to all the family. Winston had a great impact on my life. We attended Murphy HS together. I always found him exceptionally engaging. Our lives paralleled from those days up through Vietnam except he went to Alabama; I to Auburn; he went Army and I Air Force. Forrest Gump, Vietnam, and the background of what we learned from those early days gave us a foundation that made the meaning and blessings of life a true reality. His mother was my English teacher. She taught in a way that gave life meaning. I will never forget her and hold her up to others as a lasting influence on me and many others. Rest in peace, Winston. You will remain in my thoughts and actions always. Thanks to the family for the role you played in making him a guidepost for a generation!

I first met Winston as a senior in high school when I was a guest in his
home for a junior tennis tournament. What impressed me most was
a Summer reading list his father has posted on Winston's bedroom door.
It started with Plato and continued to modern times. Winston drove me
around in English sports car that would likely be a collector's item today..

At the U of A, we both had Summer jobs in upper NY state and had a memorable drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains and on to NYC. There
was never a dull moment with Winston. Just as we were getting close to
one of the tunnels leading to the city, Winston large finned Dodge started
smoking and totally stoping. We were fortunate to make the last possible turn before getting stuck in the tunnel. I have often imagined what might have happened to 2 Southern boys with AL tags on their car, stopping tunnel traffic in 1962!

In subsequent years, it was always a pleasure to see Winston at his lectures and book signings in Atlanta. He was always gracious and understated. He will be missed by so many.
