CARL LANGSCHMIDT Obituary

Carl H. Langschmidt, Jr., 81, known affectionately as “Lang”, died in his sleep on November 18, 2012 after a brief illness. Born September 17, 1931, the only son of Evelyn Hall and Carl H. Langschmidt, Sr., who competed for Germany in the 1928 Olympics, Mr. Langschmidt graduated from Central High School in Memphis in 1949. During high school he was an All-Memphis and All-State basketball player and helped lead Central High School to an undefeated record in the 1948-49 city league. Lang attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN where he played varsity basketball, served as President of Kappa Sigma fraternity and commanded a regiment in the Army ROTC as a Colonel. He graduated in 1953 with the coveted award of “Torchbearer,” the highest student honor conferred by the University of Tennessee. He then attended the University of Tennessee College of Law, where he led his class academically, was editor-in-chief for the Tennessee Law Review and graduated with the highest honors as a member of the national honor society, Order of the Coif. After law school, Lang served as a first lieutenant in the US Army Counter Intelligence Corps until 1957 when he returned to Memphis to practice law. He practiced law for 45 years at Boone, Wellford, Clark, Langschmidt & Apperson and then Armstrong, Allen, Prewitt, Gentry, Johnston & Holmes, PLLC until his retirement in 2002. He was primarily a trial lawyer, representing both local and national business firms. Lang served as a member of the Tennessee Board of Law Examiners for seventeen years, where he helped train law graduates who passed the Tennessee Bar Exam, which he also helped author each year. He was a member of the American Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Association, Memphis and Shelby County Bar Association and the Lawyers Journal Club. Lang also served as a special judge in the Shelby County Circuit Court substituting for the elected trial judges. He worked with the late Mayor Wyeth Chandler in the representation of Shelby County in the one-man, one-vote lawsuit, Baker v. Carr, that culminated in a decision by the Supreme Court of the United States. Lang served as the first Chairman of the joint Memphis and Shelby County Zoning Board of Adjustment. He was President of the Phoenix Club in 1963 and served on the Board oF Directors of the Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs of Greater Memphis. He also served on the University of Tennessee Athletic Board. He was a devout Episcopalian and a communicant of St John’s Episcopal Church. However, Lang’s greatest passion was basketball and his love for the sport never faded. As the coach of the Grace Saint Luke’s Church sixth grade basketball team for ten years, he not only coached his teams to many league and tournament victories but also taught a generation of boys the lessons of basketball and life. Lang was a fixture in the AAU basketball community for many years and is remembered all across Memphis for his dedication to basketball and all those who love the game. In his retirement years Lang travelled extensively and especially enjoyed summers at his home in Vermont. He played excellent bridge and competitive golf and he loved following his Tennessee Vols. He was a member of the Memphis Country Club, The University Club and The Quechee Club in Quechee, Vermont. Lang was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Paula Rainey Langschmidt, and sister Mary Jane Langschmidt. He is survived by his twin sister Anne Langschmidt Dickerson, niece Lynnette Flippin Bugg, nephews Thomas Victor Flippin (Dee), Lake City Florida and Stephen Carl Benton (Kathleen), Sacramento, California, sister-in-law Frances “Pebble” Rainey Hager, Klamath Falls, Oregon, brother-in-law Horace “Brick” Rainey IV, Knoxville, Tennessee, nieces Oakley Hager Day (Chad), Ericha Hager Gudmastad (Mark), Meredith Hager, Katherine Martin Rainey Schleuter, and Frances Cornelia Rainey Davis, many grand nieces and nephews and a host of devoted friends. A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Monday, November 26, 2012, at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. Private family burial was held in Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made in Lang’s name to St. John’s Episcopal Church at 3245 Central, Memphis, TN 38111, the Memphis Boy Choir, WriteMemphis, or the charity of the donor’s choice. The Kirk family from Nashville all send our warmest condolences to the Langschmidt family. We knew and loved Carl. Our mother, Theresa Rainey Kirk, was Paula's Aunt. Her children, Bee, Annette, and Rainey were cousins of Paula's, and we attended their wedding.

Carl and I were classmates made our way together at Central High School, graduating with a number of classmates, who like Carl, made their mark on the world . He was a distinguished member of the Central class of '49 many of whom served with distinction during the Korean conflict and beyond on their return to civilian life. Here's to Carl and rest if that incredible class .

Mr. Langschmidt had one of the most terrific legal minds of anyone I have ever met. To him, the law was not just a collection of rules and regulations. The law was a very living, and tactile entity.
He once told me that the law brings people to the table in an equal and fair way. Taking no account of wealth or power, it binds us in brotherhood.

Our world is blessed with many people who really do make a difference. They work very hard to make it a better place for every body. Personal integrity, faith and a very strong moral compass, guide them all of their lives. They realize they are only one link the chain of humanity. No greater or lesser than any other.

Mr. Langschmidt was one of them.
