Anne Hale Welch Obituary
Anne Hale Welch

Los Angeles, CA

Ann Hale Welch, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away Thursday, April 20, 2017, with her family by her side. The eldest of four siblings, she was born to the late Richard and Pearl Smith in Como, Mississippi on April 12, 1935, and grew up in Tyro, Mississippi.

She attended the University of Mississippi, graduating with a degree in Speech Pathology. In 1952, while at Ole Miss, she married her hometown sweetheart, William Norman "Billy" Hale, a representative in the Mississippi State Legislature. Two years later they welcomed their daughter Joy Elizabeth. Sadly, Billy died in a car accident two days later.

In 1958, Ann married Don Welch of Oxford, Mississippi, and their son, Donald Howell Welch II was born in 1961. Ann worked for Memphis City Schools' Department of Special Education as a speech pathologist and administrator for over 30 years. She was a devoted parishioner at All Saints Episcopal Church in East Memphis, a faithful member of the choir, and served two terms as Senior Warden of the Vestry, the first woman ever to hold that post. Ann was also a long term member of the Duration Fine Arts Club.

After Don's passing in 1994, Ann moved to Los Angeles to be near her daughter, Joy, and her family. There she became a member of St. James' Episcopal Church, and a faithful volunteer at St. James' Soup Kitchen every Friday evening. She also participated in the Grandparents Committee group at her granddaughter's secondary school, Campbell Hall. Ann quickly established a large circle of friends.

Ann's thoughtfulness was legendary. She sent loving messages on beautiful notecards for every occasion, or just because she was thinking of you. The outpouring of love and support from all those who knew and loved Ann has been overwhelming. To paraphrase Edna St. Vincent Millay, "the presence of her absence is everywhere".

Ann's passing leaves a void for all who knew her, but especially for the immediate family she leaves behind: son, Hal Welch, his wife, Barbara Welch, their daughter, Marty Jo Welch; her two sisters, Faye Woods and Bonnie Schwartz, and her daughter, Joy McManus; granddaughter, Kylie Ann McManus, and son-in-law, Jeff McManus.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on August 12, 2017, at 2 p.m., at All Saints' Episcopal Church at 1508 S. White Station Rd, Memphis, TN 38117.
