Chester Richard Figiel was born in Lackawanna, New York on September 25, 1928. Chester, 88, passed away surrounded by his family after a short illness.

Chester attended Buffalo State University before graduating from Memphis State University (University of Memphis) with both his Bachelors of Science and Master of Arts degrees. He entered the United States Navy in 1950, and received an honorable discharge in 1954. He was a professional baseball player and was inducted into the Western New York Baseball Hall of Fame. Chester was a principal for the Memphis City Schools System and retired after 33 years. He was beloved by teachers and students alike. He was a communicant of St. Therese-Little Flower Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Norma Coda Figiel; his daughter, Dr. Victoria Figiel of Avondale Estates, Georgia; his son, Dr. Chester Figiel Jr. (Beth) of LaGrange, Georgia; his daughter Norma Lynn Holladay of Memphis, Tennessee; his daughter Jennifer Louth (Larry) of Memphis, Tennessee; his daughter, Julie Holland (Joseph) of Paris, Tennessee; his six grandchildren: Elizabeth McNally (Christopher), Josie Holland, Daniel Figiel, James Figiel, Natalie Figiel, Samantha Figiel, and his great-grandson, Liam McNally. He is also survived by his brothers: Stanley Figiel Jr. (Patricia) of Blasdell, New York, and John Figiel of Baltimore, Maryland along with a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley Sr. and Josephine Navala Figiel of Lackawanna, New York; his sister, Helen Koczaja of Depew, New York; and his brother, Edward F. Figiel of Woodlawn, New York.

Visitation will be from 4-6pm on Sunday, April 2nd at Canale Funeral Directors with the rosary said at 5:30. A funeral mass will be held at St. Therese - Little Flower Catholic Church, 1644 Jackson Avenue at 9:30am Monday, April 3rd.
