Chestine Brazil Cowan, 92, of Memphis, TN passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2017. Daughter of the late Chester and Annie Brazil, she was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church Lauderdale. A native Memphian and a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, she completed a BS degree from LeMoyne College (now LeMoyne- Owen College) and a MS degree from Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis).

Passionate about early childhood development, she taught for over 30 years in the legacy Memphis City Schools of Magnolia, Hamilton, Carnes, A. B. Hill, and South Park Elementary Schools, retiring in 1978 as a city school administrator in early childhood education.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, James L. Cowan II; her sister, Beatrice Allen; her son, James L. Cowan III M.D.; her daughter, Anne Janice "Angie" Cowan; and three grandchildren – Aren Cowan Quaye (Alex); James L. Cowan IV; and Marjorie Cowan Lightford (Melvin) and one great grandson, Aubrey Quaye; nieces and nephews, and a host of loving relatives and friends.

In her honor, flowers are appreciated as well as donations to LeMoyne Owen College, 807 Walker Avenue, Memphis, TN 38106.
