Demetria Crump McLaughlin Obituary
Demetria Crump McLaughlin

Memphis, TN

Demetria Crump McLaughlin was born April 7, 1928, and passed away peacefully on September 8, 2017, at the Ave Maria Home in Memphis. She was the daughter of Edward Hull Crump, Jr. and Louise Fly Crump, and the granddaughter of former Memphis Mayor E. H. Crump. Demetria was preceded in death by her husband, Stephan McLaughlin, and her sister, Betty Crump Pidgeon McGeorge.

She graduated from Miss Hutchison's School and attended Ogontz Junior College in Philadelphia. She was a communicant of Calvary Episcopal Church throughout her life.

Demetria met the love of her life, "Big Steve," married and spent a short freezing winter in Indiana while he served in the Army. They settled in Memphis and welcomed the birth of their three sons.

Demetria loved writing and sketching which may have led to her obsession with leaving handwritten notes and Post-It notes around the house clearly indicating what needed to be done and who should do it! She thoroughly enjoyed music, theater and film, all attributes that she passed onto her children. She also loved family vacations out west where she enjoyed the ocean and the culture of Southern California.

She also fell in love with Big Steve's passion for the opera. She devoted herself to tireless fundraising for Opera Memphis and along with other opera enthusiasts put together a memorable group trip to San Francisco, a wonderful modeling show, and a successful gala to support this local Memphis gem that had struggled financially during part of the eighties.

Most importantly, Demetria deeply loved her family, especially her boys. As the sons started their own families, her grandchildren fondly began to call her "DD". The grandchildren loved to go visit DD! She was also crazy about the extended family of cousins, nieces, and nephews! Demetria loved people and cared about their story. She truly never met a stranger and there was a good chance she would call you "honey" by the end of the conversation. She was humble, gracious, caring, funny and kept all those who knew her laughing at her joyous spirit! As her son Steve recently posted, "Demetria changed the world for good just by being herself and through many loving connections with others!"

She is survived by three sons: Steve McLaughlin of Memphis, John Laughlin of Los Angeles, and Ted McLaughlin (Vicki) of Eads and four grandchildren, including John Ryan McLaughlin of Los Angeles, Madeleine McLaughlin of Memphis, Brode' McLaughlin and Ella McLaughlin of Eads. She also leaves a sister, Louise Crump Smithwick Wade of Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

The family wishes to thank Lily Nering and Gwen Hodges for their passionate and loving care over the years and to the many wonderful nurses at Crossroads and Ave Maria who cared for her over the last 18 months.

A memorial service will be held at a future date. The family requests that memorials be made to Calvary Episcopal Church, 102 N. 2nd Street, Memphis, TN., 38103, or to the .
