Diane Schug Basch

Englewood, fl

Diane Schug Basch passed away peacefully at age 79 with family in Suwanee, GA on August 22nd, 2017. Diane was born in Utica, NY on August 19, 1938 to Eloise Townsend Schug and Harold J. Schug.

Diane attended Utica Free Academy and graduated with a degree in education from Potsdam State Teachers College in 1960, where she was a member of Alpha Kappa Phi (Agonian) sorority. She began her career as a teacher, and married Michael D. Basch in 1961. She moved frequently, living in several cities in NY, NJ, MI, TN and FL. After divorcing in 1979, she raised her three children in Memphis, where she worked for FedEx in its Human Resources department. Diane transferred to FedEx in Sarasota, FL in 1987, where she later retired in 2004. She continued to work as a part-time nanny for friends because of her love of children.

After moving to Florida in 1987 and restoring the oldest house on Manasota Key, Diane became involved in the Englewood community and joined the Historical Society. She was very active in the Englewood United Methodist Church, and was a member of the Englewood PEO Chapter, helping to provide educational opportunities for woman.

Diane was a social butterfly who made friends easily. She loved to paint, play bridge and entertain with her unique and creative flair. She loved traveling, keeping up with current events, discovering new restaurants and hosting visitors at her home. She was incredibly thoughtful, caring and creative--and was notorious for always having toys for the kids, beach toys for the families, a packet of articles for each of her kids and list of local events for guests. She loved to share the local community and lifestyle of which she was so fond.

DB, as she was known by her family and friends, was a loving, devoted, resourceful and caring mother to three children, and a proud grandmother to seven grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Lisa Basch Johnson (Michael) of Boulder, CO, Jeffrey David Basch (Jill) of Oakland, CA and Michael Wayne Basch (Teresa) of Suwanee, GA; by her grandchildren, Hailey Basch, Logan Basch, Olivia Basch, Corinna Basch, Nicholas Johnson, Natalie Johnson and Julia Basch; and by her sister, Sandra (Sandi) Schug Stevens (Thomas) of Fort Mill, SC. She was preceded in death by her mother, Eloise Townsend Schug Whyte (2013), and her father, Harold J. Schug (1959).

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on November 21, at the Englewood United Methodist Church, 700 East Dearborn Street, Englewood, FL 34223, with a reception to follow at her home on Manasota Key. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Englewood Chapter HH of P.E.O. (https://donations.peointernational.org/) in her honor.
