Donna Jean Wilson Obituary
Donna Jean Wilson

Cordova, TN

On June 21, 2017, Donna Jean Wilson, at the age of 87, passed away at her home. She checked the obituaries every day to make sure she wasn't there! Well, Mom, you made it today.

Donna Wilson was born in Galesburg, IL, to Augustine and Mabelle Ring. She was a middle child with an older brother, Auggie, and a younger brother, Jim. She remembers having lots of fun as a child. As a young woman, she and her friend, Sue Martin, were certified as communication specialists and worked for Piedmont Airlines. Donna, Sue and little brother, Jim, had a lot of fun together.

In 1953, Donna married David Wilson. They met on the beach in Myrtle Beach, SC, lived in Hot Springs, AR, and finally settled in Memphis, TN. Sue Martin tells me that she thinks it was love at first sight. Two children, Linda Ann and Barbara Jean, were born. "Mrs. Wilson" loved children. She worked at McLean Baptist Church pre-school for over 35 years. She remembered every child and was thrilled to follow some via facebook and receive cards, letters, and visits from them over the years. She followed sports, enjoying Redbirds games with Vicki and Bob Buck, attending the Grizzlies games with The Kirbys, as well as watching football and basketball on TV. She didn't mind embarrassing her daughter by stopping to talk to one of the Grizzlies or her favorite news personality if she encountered them while shopping.

She often attended the Broadway musicals at the Orpheum with her daughter, Linda. Those two had great fun at the annual neighborhood yard sales with Vicki Buck and Simone Belk. Her trips to Las Vegas and New York City were lots of fun for her. She fit right in with her daughter's friends. She was an active Flamingo Phlock member.

The Wilsons were longtime residents of mid-town Memphis. They lived there until they were literally carried out when their health declined.

Donna Wilson made friends wherever she went. During her health challenges in her last years, she was always friendly, always gracious and made numerous new friends. We particularly want to thank the staff of Brookdale Memphis, she felt like Brookdale was her home. She had several friends there among the staff and residents. We are grateful for the many acts of kindness by the Brookdale staff. And then there is Susta, Ms. Gerri, who bonded with Mom immediately. Roneisha, you all have a special place at Brookdale Memphis and a special place in our hearts.

Donna Wilson will be laid to rest next to her beloved daughter Bobbie Jean in the Bartlett-Ellendale cemetery.

Donna Wilson loved children. To memorialize her life, please donate to or volunteer at an organization benefiting children. Memorials can also be sent to St Jude Children's Hospital.

Donna Wilson was preceded in death by her parents, Augustine and Mabelle Ring; her big brother and his wife, Auggie and Vi Ring; her little brother and his wife, James and Marge Ring; and her daughter, Barbara (Bobbie) Jean Wilson. James, Jim, Jimmy just left us and we knew she wanted to be with him again.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, David Wilson; her nephew, Bryant Ring, niece Tara Ring, and her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Steve Baggett. Her son-in-law was her favorite. Her friend, Sue Martin, will miss her. She is also survived by her close friend, Mary Murphy, and the entire Murphy family. She loved you all.

Mom would want you to know that everything is going to be alright. Let the good times roll tonight. A gathering of family and friends with a reception will be held from 12-2 pm on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at Family Funeral Care with the funeral service to follow at 2 pm that same day. Burial will follow at Bartlett Ellendale Cemetery.
