Dorothy Marie Grannan Obituary
Dorothy Marie Grannan

Memphis, TN

Dorothy Marie Grannan was born on November 28, 1923, in Mount Vernon, OH. Comforted by the presence of loving family and the Anointing of the Sick, she departed this life for her heavenly reward on April 24, 2017, after a short illness. Dorothy had recently relocated back to Memphis, TN from Largo, FL where she had lived for the past twenty-five years after retiring there in 1991. She was in hospice care at the Grannan family home where she had previously lived for thirty-four years beginning in 1956. A lifelong Catholic, Dorothy was a communicant of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Largo. While in Memphis she attended Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.

Dorothy was predeceased by her father, John Joseph Hunter, and her mother Elizabeth Catherine Hunter. She was also predeceased by her beloved husband of forty-nine years, Cornelius Austin "Curt" Grannan.

She is survived by three sons: John William "Jack" (Cheryl) of Memphis; Kenneth Austin of Palm Harbor, FL; and Timothy Francis, Sr. (Vickie) of Memphis. She is survived by her daughter, Marjorie Louise Baxter (David) of Rossville, TN; eight grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. A strong matriarch, Dorothy grew up during the Great Depression and later was a young wife during World War II. She told her family many fascinating stories about these times in her life. Through these stories she was able to teach her children to distain wastefulness and share blessings. Dorothy also showed her family how to love unconditionally and how to pray fervently and often.

Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 3700 Thomas Street, Memphis, TN 38127. A Memorial Mass will then be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Following the Mass, entombment will be at her crypt in the Mausoleum at Calvary Cemetery, 1663 Elvis Presley Boulevard, Memphis, TN 38106. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to memorialize Dorothy's life do so with a contribution to a charity of their choosing.

Dorothy's family would especially like to thank the staffs of Crossroads Hospice and Canale Funeral Directors for their care and support during this difficult time.
