Dr. Edward Steven Kaplan, 83 passed away in Memphis. Dr. Kaplan was born on November 11, 1933 in Memphis to the late Jack and Violet Needleman Kaplan .

He was named to the All Memphis Football team while at Snowden Jr. High; he graduated as valedictorian of Central High School.

Dr. Kaplan graduated from Yale University in 1955 and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and named a Scholar of the First Rank. He went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his neurosurgery training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, while also obtaining a Masters of Science degree from the University of MN.

Dr. Kaplan and his family moved back to Memphis in 1963 where he practiced neurosurgery almost 40 years at the Baptist Hospital and University of TN where he was an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery.

He was a member of the Memphis and Shelby County Medical Society, Tennessee Medical Association, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

Dr. Kaplan was a humble Renaissance man. He was a voracious student of history and continued to audit classes at the University of Memphis in retirement. He enjoyed tennis, travel and classical music. He served as a volunteer neurosurgeon at Church Health. He was a proud member of the Egyptians, the Romeos and the English Speaking Union (A recipient of the Hugo Dixon Award). He recently was recognized by the Baptist Hospital with the Pillar Award of Distinction for excellence in patient care and service in the community.

Dr. Kaplan was married for 59 years to Linda Stone Kaplan. He is survived by his sons, Dr. Andrew Stone Kaplan (Dr. Nathalie Feldman) and Dr. Jeffrey Stone Kaplan (Amanda Green) and four grandchildren, Jessica, Ben, Brackets and Samantha and brother-in-law, Warren R. Stone (Virginia). The family would also like to acknowledge the care and friendship of Sherry Anderson.

Services will be held on Sunday, July 30 in the Sanctuary of Temple Israel, 1376 East Massey Road, at 3:30 p.m., followed by visitation with the family and a reception.
