Elizabeth "Bettye" Land Burns, 85, of Memphis, TN passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on February 14, 2017. Born in Memphis, she was the daughter of the late Albert Land and Marie Pender Land. She was preceded in death by her husband, of 61 years, James F. Burns, three children, James Francis Jr., John Kevin and Patricia Claire, her sister and brother-in-law Gloria (James) Alexander.

In her life, Bettye was a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother whose true heart was felt by all those who met her. Bettye went to St. Agnes Academy in Memphis, TN, St. Catherine College in Louisville KY and attended Sienna College in Memphis, TN. Bettye was a member of Sacred Heart Church. She was a third order of the Dominican Laity. She lived her Dominican vocation through her actions and deeds. Lay Dominicans are accordingly distinguished both by their own spirituality and by their service to God and neighbor in the Church. She enjoyed a rich life of volunteer work and social activities including the St. Joseph and Madonna Circle and volunteered at St. Peter's Orphanage taking care of the babies. She retired from the Corp of Engineers as a Purchasing Agent. Active in her community, she was instrumental in stopping the interstate through Overton Park.

Bettye is survived by her five daughters, Terry (Gary) Hopper, Kathleen (Joe) Speck, Eileen Burns, Margaret (Allan) Bruch, Sheila (Eric) Lewis and a son Kevin (Meg) Burns. Seven grandchildren: Maureen Hodge, Kelly (Sam) Moustafa, Lauren (Breen) Stevens, Tom (Crystal) Sawyer, Tricia (Brian) Epperson, Brian Canon and Theresa (Justin) Pickett. Ten great grandchildren Caitlin and Dylan Hodge, Hayley and Cullen Stevens, Liam and Logan Sawyer, Keller And Kannon Epperson, Canon and Oliver Pickett. She also leaves her cousin, Dr. John (Kathleen) Pender, nieces Karen (Skip) Martin, Laura Dodds, nephew Greg (Carol) Alexander and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bettye was a 48 year breast cancer survivor and helped many women through Reach For Recovery. She showed great strength and courage during her twelve year battle with Alzheimers.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 16th, 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Canale Funeral Directors, 2700 Union Ave Extended 38112, with a rosary at 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am Friday, February 17, at The Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, 1695 Central Avenue, with the burial immediately following the service at Calvary Cemetery, 1663 Elvis Presley Blvd.
