Estelle Riley Smith Obituary
Estelle Riley Smith

Cary, NC

Estelle Smith, 80, of Cary, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2018.

Estelle was born in Duck Hill, Mississippi on April 29, 1937, to Grady and Byrdean Riley. She was one of 5 children. She loved watching and staying current with the news as well as all sports but especially tennis and Duke basketball. She graduated from Memphis Tech High School in Memphis, TN and received a bachelor's degree from Florida Southern College.

Estelle was predeceased by her husband, Robert Carlton Smith, her brother, Henry Riley of Memphis, TN, and her sister Bobbie Kelsey of Memphis, TN. She is survived by three loving children, Rhonda Larsen and her husband, Robert Harrington, Portola Valley, CA, Karen Holliman of Durham NC, and David Holliman of Cary, NC; five grandchildren, Kaylan Sharp and her husband, Scott Sharp, Kiera Larsen, Erin Harrington, Mackenzie Larsen and Jordan Holliman, and three great-grandchildren, Sawyer, Sloane, and Spencer Sharp; sister, Fran Winn of Louisiana, and sister Bunny Hayen of Idaho.

Estelle and Robert lived all over the country as he was a mechanical engineer and traveled for many projects. They spent many years in Idaho enjoying skiing, biking and the outdoors. In the latter part of their years, they lived in Wilmington, NC, and Southern Pines, NC where they enjoyed playing tennis and golf together and spending time with their family. She was a wonderful southern lady and taught her children the importance of education and her family loved her southern cooking. She put herself through college while raising her family and became a CPA. She had some interesting jobs during her career, once working at NASA at the Kennedy Space Center, during which time she experienced a lot of "firsts." She was there when the first manned orbits were made in space; when Shepherd made the first man flight and when Armstrong walked on the moon. She also loved her job at Disney World.

Her children gathered in Cary, NC for an intimate family memorial. The cremains and a full family gathering will take place in McCall, Idaho in mid-September as Idaho is a special place for our family.
