Gloria Kay Barnette Obituary
Gloria Kay Barnette

Memphis, TN

Gloria Kay Barnette passed away Sunday morning April 2, 2017. She was known by her family as Gigi, a self-proclaimed nickname to maintain her "38+ years of age" (a joke that lasted 50 years) and her vivacious, energetic, and engaging personality. Gigi promoted positive self-esteem for ALL as the way to handle the challenges of life and overcome all obstacles.

Gloria Kay was born on a farm in Hermitage, TN. She wrapped and sold sausage on the corner of their property to help support the family income as a child. She met her future husband, Bill Barnette, an intelligent high school dropout. She inspired and supported him all the way through medical school while working as an English Teacher at Humes High School in Memphis. She left her career to raise her three children, as her children matured she restarted her career by obtaining a Master's Degree in Counseling from the University of Memphis. She retired twice as the Guidance Counselor from Olive Branch High School, leaving her imprint on all that she encountered. She was a great influence on many people's lives throughout her career.

She enjoyed cooking, entertaining, fashion, decorating, and being with family and friends.

She leaves behind her vibrant, positive legacy with her three children, David Barnette, Beverly King, and Steve Barnette; their children Kyle and Ryan Barnette; Jessica, Brian, Lauren, Stephanie and Matthew King; Samantha and Katherine Barnette; her son-in-law Kerry King and her daughter-in-law Annette Barnette; her nieces and nephews of the Kay family; numerous lifelong friends; and all those that she encountered through her 88 years of life.

We will all miss her and will remember the positive, direct influence she made in our lives.

Visitation with Family will be Saturday, April 8 from 10-11:30 a.m. with a Service to follow at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to a charity close to your family and heart, in her name and honor.
