Hal Fiser Obituary
Hal Fiser

Clarksdale, MS

Flags were at half-mast in Clarksdale, Mississippi, on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 in remembrance of Hal Fiser, who left us on Monday, March 20, 2017. He will be remembered in a celebration of his life on Thursday, March 23, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Clarksdale following visitation at 9:30 a.m.

Hal was born in Briensburg, Kentucky, in 1928. After earning a bachelor's degree in biology at Murray State University and a master's degree from the University of Mississippi, Hal moved to Clarksdale in 1950 to teach high school science and to coach basketball.

He then served as a sergeant in the United States Army before returning to Clarksdale with his bride, Harvey Ross Young. Hal soon became interested in the real estate and then insurance businesses, earning one of the earliest and longest held insurance licenses in the state. He opened the Hal Fiser Agency in Clarksdale, serving the town's real estate and insurance needs for over sixty years. While contributing to the development of Clarksdale through his business interests, Hal was also active in numerous civic and community organizations.

Hal and Harvey were founding members of St. Paul's United Methodist Church where they served as lay leaders and as Sunday School teachers. Hal was on the Clarksdale Chamber of Commerce, serving for a time as its president and honored as Clarksdale's Citizen of the Year in 2010. He also served on the Industrial Foundation Board of Directors, on the Library Board, as a founder and chairman of Citizens for Clarksdale, and as past president of the Clarksdale Board of Realtors. Hal shared his business acumen generously in the community, including as an adjunct professor at Delta State University where he taught courses in Real Estate.

In addition to his business and civic interests, Hal enjoyed contributing to Clarksdale's social life. He was a founding member of the Higher Mathematics and Art Appreciation Club, the local poker group. Hal and Harvey could occasionally be spotted dancing to the music of Super Chikan celebrating the rich culture of the Mississippi Delta. Hal is also known by many in the community for his Christmas eve gift deliveries and visits.

Hal enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially sharing time with his family on the Mississippi River at Burkes Hunting Club. He and Harvey were voracious travelers, always planning their next adventure.

Hal Fiser is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Harvey Ross Young Fiser and by four of their five sons. He is preceded in death by his son Ross and by his parents and two brothers. He will always be honored by son Greg Fiser and his wife Robin Fiser of Madison, Mississippi, by son John Fiser and his wife Libba Fiser of Clarksdale, Mississippi, by son David Fiser and his wife Stacey Fiser of Germantown, Tennessee, by Ross' wife Michelle Fiser Gist and her husband John Todd Gist of Scott, Mississippi, and by his son Harvey Fiser of Jackson, Mississippi. He will also be dearly missed by his eleven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, his dedicated co-workers at Hal Fiser Agency, by numerous town and church friends, and, especially, by his dear friend Faye Benson.

Memorials may be sent to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 1012 W. 2nd St., Clarksdale, Mississippi 38614, to the Capital Campaign for Flowers Manor, 1251 Lee Drive, Clarksdale, Mississippi 38614, or a .
