Irene Harris Norton was born in Union County, Mississippi on August 12, 1925, and died peacefully at her residence in Olive Branch, Mississippi on March 21, 2017. She and her husband Harley were married for 44 years until his death in 1993.



Irene taught typing in Myrtle High School, worked for a newspaper as her first job in Memphis, also worked for various banks in Memphis, was briefly employed by General Motors, a construction firm in Memphis,and later she and Harley bought Getwell Hardware in Memphis which they owned and managed together. After her husband's death, Irene continued to mange the store herself, and her knowledge of the parts and stock in the store made her well loved and respected by her many customers. After retiring from managing the store, Irene continued to live in Memphis, then moved to Olive Branch in 2008 and enjoyed the many friends she made at The Oaks at Parkview.



She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Harris of Myrtle, Mississippi and by two sisters, Ora Lee Harris Robison of Myrtle, Mississippi and Katherine Harris Coffey of Lafayette, Louisiana. She is survived by three nieces, Cynthia Robison Tipton of Cleveland, Tennessee, Nancy Robison of Monroe, Louisiana, Sherry Hall Smith of New Albany, Mississippi and two nephews, Tommy Hall of Huntsville, Alabama and Glenn Harris Coffey of Lafayette, Louisiana and nine great nieces and nephews and twenty-one great-great nieces and nephews.



A gravesite service will be held on Thursday March 23 at Vista Memorial Cemetery in New Albany on Highway 15 South, next to United Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at the grave site at 11:30 AM and the memorial service will be held at noon. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to or to Bellevue Baptist Church.
