Bluffton, SC

Jack Bayne "Tex" Uhlhorn of Bluffton, SC left us at noon on Sunday, January 15, 2017. He has joined his son Jack Jr. "Jay" in Heaven after a long cardiac illness. He was grateful for the love and services of Hospice Care of the Lowcountry during his final months.

Tex was a native of Harlingen, Texas, the youngest child of the late Jacqueline Cecil Walsh Uhlhorn and the late William Bayne Uhlhorn. He lived in Panama and Puerto Rico before moving to Memphis, TN. He was a graduate of Christian Brothers High School and attended Ole Miss and the University of Memphis.

Tex married the former Carol Carr, and they recently celebrated their 42nd anniversary. He is survived by his wife Carol, their daughter Jacqueline, her husband Derek Burney, and their children Susan Ruth and Atticus. He also leaves one brother William V. Uhlhorn and his wife Cindy, of Memphis, TN; and his sister Penelope Bruning and her husband Frank, of Tucson, AZ. He is missed by sisters-in-law Martha Simmons and Rachel Aultman of Mississippi and by Robert Carr of Tennessee, and by his stepsister Ann Porter Uhlhorn of New Orleans. Tex leaves a very large family of nieces, nephews and cousins across the country, who loved him mightily. He was also a loving friend of Bryan W. Putnam of Bluffton.

Tex was affiliated with Phi Kappa Theta fraternity at Ole Miss. He was a 37-year member of St. Andrew by the Sea UMC, where he often served as an usher.

Tex and Carol moved to Hilton Head Island in 1979, where Tex formed a home construction business with his Dad and another partner. Classic Homes, Inc. built several "spec" homes and a number of custom residences in Moss Creek. Ever the electronics enthusiast, he also opened Director's Chair Video, operating a video equipment sales and rental business. He was a part-time investor and a full-time Daddy to his children.

Tex enjoyed boating and fishing the local waters with his family and friends, and he could generally be seen in the company of at least one Boykin Spaniel.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, January, 20, 2017 at 2:00 pm at St. Andrew by The Sea UMC, 20 Pope Ave., Hilton Head Island, SC. There will also be a Celebration of Life Service in Memphis at a later date.
