Dr. Jan Leslie Porter Obituary
Dr. Jan Leslie Porter

Spartanburg, SC

Dr. Jan Leslie Porter, 63, of Spartanburg, SC, died Sunday, March 19, 2017, of complications of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). A native of Memphis, TN, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Vonne F. Porter and Josephine B. Porter.

Jan was a graduate of the University of Connecticut, Duke University School of Medicine, and completed her Residency in Family Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. After practicing two years as a civilian physician at the Naval Hospital in Charleston, SC, she moved to Spartanburg where she practiced with Foothills Family Medicine on the west side of Spartanburg for nearly 25 years. She then practiced in Union, SC with Family Practice Associates for three years. She served as Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at both Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and Mary Black Memorial Hospital and was also Chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee at both hospitals. She was a member of the American Academy of Family Medicine. She was also an active member of the South Carolina Academy of Family Medicine where she served on the Board and several committees over the years. Dr. Porter was both honored and blessed to serve her many patients over 30 years of medical practice and her life was enriched by the many patients, staff, and colleagues she worked with over the years.

She was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church where she served as Council President, Financial Secretary, Endowment Fund Committee Chair, on Constitution and Bylaws task forces, and in Finance, Stewardship, and several other ministries over the years. Her church family was a source of inspiration and support through many difficult times. Jan was an accomplished ballroom dancer, having won numerous awards in ballroom dance competitions. She was also an avid gardener.

Surviving is her very special sister, Laurie Lee Porter of Suwanee, GA. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Erin Kay Porter.

A service honoring her memory will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday, March 26, 2017, at St. John's Lutheran Church, by the Rev. Michael Shackelford and the Rev. Emily Edenfield. A reception and time of visitation will follow the service at the church. Private burial will be held at a later date in Memphis, TN.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 415 S. Pine St., Spartanburg, SC 29302; and Annandale Village, 3500 Annandale Lane, Suwanee, GA 30024.
