Janet Sunstrom McLaughlin Obituary
Janet Sunstrom McLaughlin

Memphis, tn

Janet passed away peacefully after a short illness, surrounded by family, in Nashville, TN. A resident of Memphis/Germantown since 1968, she moved to Nashville to be closer to family in May, 2016.

Janet was born at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. She was the third of four girls born to Ludmilla B. Sunstrom and Edwin A. Sunstrom, living in Highland Park, IL. In 1941 the family relocated to Knoxville, TN where she completed high school and attended UT, Knoxville. Janet met her husband, Mack (C.R.) McLaughlin, Jr., from Memphis while both attended UT, Knoxville (where she was a member of Tri Delta

sorority). They were married on July 18, 1953 and lived in Panama where Mack volunteered for service in the Army.

Janet worked in administration for the Panama Canal Company; retired in 1992 with 20 years of service with IRS in Memphis; was a volunteer for Methodist Hospital Hospice and completed 20 years of service at 80 years of age. Janet was a horseback rider, a "200 Club" bowler, and played international contract bridge. She was a master seamstress, knitter, and crossword puzzle solver. She was a Sunday school teacher, avid reader, volunteer and animal lover. She was an avid Memphis State Tiger basketball fan attending with season tickets for 48 years. She was a world traveler, visiting 26 different countries. She and her three sisters had annual retreats for over 40 consecutive years. Janet will be remembered for her wit, love of animals and abundant kindness.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Ludmilla and Edwin A. Sunstrom; her sister, Lois Sandhofer, and her husband, C.R. (Mack) McLaughlin, Jr. She is survived by her children Mick (and wife Jane) in Nashville, and Ann in Portland, OR; grand-daughter Julia; and sisters Suzanne Shaw in Nashville, and Jean Cain in Boston, MA; and many nieces/nephews and grand nieces/nephews.

We are thankful for her neighbors at Kimbrough Green in Germantown, the care given by Amedisys Hospice Care, and Morningside of Belmont in Nashville. A graveside service was held at Memorial Gardens in Memphis on June 8. Any donations are suggested for or Smile Train, two favorite charities of Janet's. Local donations are suggested for Church of Health in Memphis.
