Dr. Jerrie C. Scott was born June 2, 1944 in El Dorado, AR, the fifth and youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Jinks Cobb (Irene). She completed the doctorate in Linguistics at the University of Michigan before joining the University of Florida Department of English as Assistant Professor of Linguistics in 1977 and continued after receiving tenure as Associate Professor of Linguistics from 1982 until 1987, when she established the Center for Studies of Urban Literacy in Ohio.

Author of numerous books, articles, and scholarly editions, Dr. Scott founded most notably the National African Read-In, an annual worldwide literacy event sponsored since 1990 by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).

She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Angela R. Scott Sailor, J.D. (Elroy); her sister, Ms. Linda Wilson; two amazing grandchildren, Alamni Deje and E. Claybyrne Prescot Sailor; lifelong friend, Mrs. Gloria Soldon-Snowden; brilliant nieces, nephews, cousins, and godchildren; and a grateful host of friends, professional colleagues, and former graduate students.

Visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. at Hall Funeral Home, Purcellville, VA. Services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on February 25, 2017. Burial will be private.
