Jewell Lawrence Scarborough Obituary
Jewell Lawrence Scarborough

Memphis, TN

Jewell Dean Lawrence Scarborough, 91, passed away peacefully February 27, 2017 at Methodist-Germantown Hospital. Born in the Round Hill Community, Dallas Co., AR on August 23, 1925, she grew up on the family farm-the ninth of twelve children.

After graduating in 1946 from the Levi Hospital School of Nursing in Hot Springs, AR, Jewell moved to Memphis, TN, and started her nursing career at the old Kennedy Veteran's Hospital on Getwell Road. She wed William Henry Scarborough in 1949, and they were happily married for 42 years, until his death in 1992. Jewell retired from the University of Memphis in 1991, after working as a registered nurse for 25 years in the Student Health Center. She was a faithful member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, and the Stewardship Sunday School Class for over 60 years, which she loved dearly. Jewell was an avid reader, and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and sewing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Emma Green Lawrence; husband, William H. Scarborough; brothers, William Earl Lawrence, James Christopher Lawrence, Woodrow Watson Lawrence, and Lewis Keith Lawrence; sisters, Vera Lawrence, Ernestine Bonner, Jessie Mae Fite, Edith Louella Lawrence, and Audrey Bernice Tedford. Her survivors include sons, Gary William Scarborough and Steven Henry Scarborough (Barbara Grace Johnson Scarborough); beloved grandchildren, Christopher Henry Scarborough, Melanie Grace Scarborough, and David William Scarborough, all of Memphis, TN; sisters, Ila Rhea Hankins and Mary Kathryn Lawrence, both of Hot Springs, AR. She also leaves many adored nieces and nephews.

Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. and a memorial service will follow at 2 p.m., Friday, March 3 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Burial will be private.

The family requests memorials be sent to Exceptional Foundation of West Tennessee, or St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
