Germantown, TN

Joseph John "Joe" Bonner, 74, of Germantown, TN, passed away on April 23, 2017 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by a family that adored him: Merry, his wife of 50 years, his children Jeannie (Peter) and John (Teresa) and his beloved grandchildren Ashlyn, Brennan and Lara. Joe was born in Kingston, PA, on March 9, 1943. He received a Bachelor's Degree from King's College and a Master's Degree in Psychology from the University of Notre Dame. He taught History and English in Baltimore, MD, until he was able to join the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a Special Agent at age 25. A career agent of 30 years, he served in South Carolina and Ohio before moving to Memphis in 1977. Joe led major investigations as a member of the Violent Crimes Squad handling kidnappings, extortion, bank robberies and violent fugitives. Additionally, he was both the Bank Robberies Coordinator and News Media Representative for the Memphis FBI Division. Joe was responsible for solving numerous cases during his lengthy career, some of which garnered national attention.

Joe will be remembered for his sharp mind, quick wit and generous heart. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and faithful friend who always believed "family is important." Joe had many hobbies and interests including gardening, gourmet cooking, woodworking and reading. He loved to tell jokes and made friends wherever he went. Joe's zest for life and love of his family and friends will be remembered.

Joe's family would like to offer special thanks to the medical staffs at West Cancer Center and Methodist Hospice, as well as the many family members and friends who walked with him during his journey of courage and faith.

A celebration of Joe's life will be Saturday, April 29 at Farmington Presbyterian Church, 8245 Farmington Blvd., Germantown, TN, with visitation at 1:00 pm and a memorial service at 2:00 pm.
