Joseph Orgill O'Brien

Joseph Orgill O'Brien, born March 11, 1933 in Memphis, Tennessee, died Wednesday, March 29th at The King's Daughters and Sons Home. He was the son of the late Florence Orgill and Thomas John O'Brien. He was a graduate of Pentecost Garrison School for Boys, The Taft School in Watertown, CT and Princeton University of Princeton, NJ, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

In 1958, he joined T.J. O'Brien Engineering Company, a firm founded by his father in 1922. He was President and Chairman of the Board of O'Brien Engineering from 1958-2002. He sold O'Brien Engineering Company in 2002 and continued doing special engineering with BeaconMedaes medical air and vacuum equipment for local and regional hospitals.

He was past president of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers, Inc., Memphis chapter of ASHRAE, a national engineering society, and a member of the American Society of Chemical Engineers. Joe was a past president of Princeton Alumni Association, past member of the Rotary Club and the Memphis Country Club, as well as a member and former president of the Memphis Hunt and Polo Club. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.

He was actively involved on the advisory board of The King's Daughters and Sons Home where he raised money for over 25 years.

He leaves his wife, Leonora Horgan O'Brien; a son, Edward Orgill O'Brien; a step-daughter, Ms. Louise Blount Shelmire; a step-son, Jesse Bedford Shelmire, IV (Hoa) of Dallas, TX; Five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 31st at Canale Funeral Directors. A private family graveside service will be Saturday, April 1st at St. John's Cemetery.
