Memphis, TN

Kathleen Day Norfleet of Memphis, Tennessee, passed away on July 11, 2017 at Methodist North Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee. She was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi, on March 27, 1940. She is predeceased by her parents, Rowena Coats Day and Woodrow Wilson Day.

She graduated from Clarksdale High School in 1958 and made her debut in 1959 with the Delta Debutante Club in Greenville, Mississippi. She earned a degree in Mathematics in 1962 from Hollins College, Roanoke, Virginia, (now Hollins University). Following college graduation, she worked at Shell Oil Company in New Orleans and later taught mathematics in the Memphis public school system. She attended the University of Mississippi School of Law in the summer of 1968, and graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Memphis School of Law in 1974 while working in the Trust Division of First Tennessee Bank (1971-1977), handling trust and estate administration.

She was admitted to the Tennessee bar in 1974, and was a member of the Memphis Bar Association and the Tennessee Bar Association; a member and Co-founder in 1979 of the Association for Women Attorneys (AWA President, 1982-1983; Vice-President, 1981-1982; Secretary, 1979-1981; Corresponding Secretary, 1990); and charter member of the Tennessee Lawyers Association for Women (TLAW). She was a practicing attorney from 1978 to 2015; her civil law practice included divorces, custody, wills, and estates. From 1988 to 2005, she was with the law firm of May, Norfleet, Fletcher, and Maxwell.

She was a member since 1991 of The Dilettantes, a women's study club founded in 1919 (President 2002-03, Vice-President 2003-04, Treasurer for eight years, and Historian). She was a former member of the Le Bonheur Club and a founding member of the Memphis Area Group Investment Club (MAGIC).

Predeceased by her husband, Dr. L. D. Hutt, she is survived by her two children, John (Jay) Peden Arkle, III, of Memphis, TN, and Jessica (Ginger) Norfleet Coy of San Francisco, CA; her daughter-in-law, Marie Donahue Arkle, her son-in-law, Bradford (Brad) Scott Coy, and four grandchildren, Gabrielle Arkle Davidson, John (Evan) Peden Arkle, IV, Graham Ashton Arkle, and Avery Meriwether Arkle; and her brother, Woodrow (Woody) W. Day, Jr., and his wife Janie Ramsey Day, of Germantown, TN; and stepchildren: Stacy Hutt Bendall of Memphis; Dr. Rebecca Hutt Walker of Germantown, TN; and L. David Hutt, III, of Memphis.
