Lois Anita Ross Nichols, 101, died October 6, 2017. She was born September 9, 1916 in Hickory Flat, MS to William W. Ross and Della Mae Ross. She is also predeseased by her sisters, Neva Weir and Marjorie Potter. In 1936, she graduated from Holmes Jr. College in Goodman, MS. Her 21 year Civil Service career began with two years in Washington, DC as a clerk/stenographer during the period that WWII started. From DC, she was transferred to Memphis and during 1942-1943 assisted in the establishment of the Inspectors Office for the Navy LCT contract with Pidgeon-Thomas Iron Company, a war project that resulted in the construction of 185 LCT landing craft near where the Memphis Pyramid stands today. She worked at the Memphis Defense Depot during the years 1956-1960 and 1968-1980. In 1944 Lois married the late Harry Buford Nichols, Jr. They were charter members of Cherokee Baptist Church, Memphis. Buford and Lois raised three children: Harry B. Nichols III, Nancy Nichols Heron and Todd W. Nichols. Lois also leaves three grandchildren, Kristine Gamblin, Roger Perkins, Taylor Nichols and five great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank Belmont Village and Baptist Reynolds Hospice House for the kindness and respect shown to her. A graveside service was held on Monday, October 9 at 10:30 a.m. in Memphis Memorial Park, 5668 Poplar Ave., Memphis, TN 38119. Bartlett Funeral Home, 901-372-5555.
