Memphis, TN

Mannie Scheinberg, 90, a long-time Memphis retail merchant, passed away March 17, 2017. He was born in Memphis, TN, graduated from Central High School, attended Southwestern College (now Rhodes College), and served in the U.S. Army during WWII (in the Canal Zone). Mannie was a member of Baron Hirsch Synagogue since 1948; as well as a long-time member of Anshei Sphard Beth El Emeth Synagogue, the Memphis Jewish Community Center, and Sam Schloss B'nai B'rith Lodge. He took pride in being active and supporting many other local, national, and international Jewish and humanitarian organizations and causes.

An avid sports fan, Mannie loved the St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Celtics, and the Memphis Grizzlies. His family and friends were also constantly amazed by his encyclopedic knowledge of movie history and facts. Known by all for his business expertise and fashion sense, he was a co-owner with his family of Mannie & Karl's Clothing Store (originally Scheinberg's Whitehaven), Phil's Menswear Shop, and Barbette's Bridal Salon on Poplar. He continued his career as a top nation-wide sales executive at Jos. A. Bank for almost 30 years and retired at 86-years-old.

Affectionately known as "Poppy" to his family, Mannie and wife, Barbara ("Beda"), have always been an unwavering source of love, support, strength, and inspiration to their children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, and friends. His family lovingly remembers frequently meeting his customers who inevitably became his lifelong friends.

Mannie was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Fannie (Ballin) Scheinberg; his sister, Libbie Smolensky; and his brother, Karl Gene Scheinberg. He leaves behind the love of his life, best friend, and wife of 68 years, Barbara Scheinberg; his daughter, Brenda (Ephraim Frank) Bluestein, and sons Marc (Amy) Scheinberg and Russell (Christine) Scheinberg; grandchildren, Lauren (Matt) Shelley, Paige Scheinberg (Ricky Montgomery), and Niki and Dovid Scheinberg; and great-granddaughter, Layla Shelley.

Funeral services will be on Monday, March 20th at 2 p.m. in the Sam Abraham Chapel at Baron Hirsch Cemetery with burial immediately following (1523 Rozelle St, Memphis, TN 38106).
