Margaret Smith "Peggy" Latham Obituary
Margaret "Peggy" Smith Latham

Memphis, TN

Margaret Smith Latham, age 82, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 24. A lifelong Memphian, Peggy was the daughter of Margaret "Peggy" Laws and Robert Day Smith and attended Hutchison School and The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY. After earning a degree in fine arts from Bennett College in Millbrook, NY, Peggy returned to Memphis where she married Swayne Latham, Jr., with whom she had four daughters.

Peggy was passionate about giving back to the community and volunteering her incredible talents and time to so many organizations. She was a longtime board member of the Children's Foundation of Memphis, starting in her teen years teaching art to handicapped children. Peggy was a beloved member of the Memphis Garden Club, winning numerous competitions and sharing her floral techniques in countless workshops, especially at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens. In recognition of her tireless devotion to their mission, the club honored Peggy with the Margaret Oates Dixon trophy. Peggy took her talents to the highest level, when in 1997 she won both the coveted Margaret Bright Biddle and Helen Hope Dechert trophies for best in class and best in show at the Philadelphia Flower Show.

Music was always a passion of Peggy's, and she could often be found at her piano effortlessly playing old standards and showtunes by ear. Once Peggy even had the opportunity to play alongside Peter Duchin, and as a jazz devotee she was invited to serve on the board of the Memphis Jazz Society.

Peggy was a great contributor to the flower guilds of St. John's and Calvary Episcopal Churches as well as Idlewild Presbyterian Church, where she was a member until her death. Peggy was fortunate to be a member of a large extended family.

She leaves Madeleine Latham Elmer (John) of Houston, TX, and sons Charles and James (Sunny); Peggy Latham McClure (Don) of Memphis and children Donald (Michelle), Stuart, and Kate (Jamie) Hershey and their daughters Morgan and Ava; Marion Latham McDonald of Memphis and children David, Nathalie, and Virginia; and Anne Latham Martin of Richmond, VA, and sons Swayne and Everett. Peggy was predeceased by her twin Dotty Smith Pigeon McCuddy and leaves her sister Madeleine Smith Moriarty of Brookfield, CT, as well as many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and cousins.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday, May 26 in Elmwood Cemetery, with a memorial service following at 11 a.m. at Idlewild Presbyterian Church in Memphis. A reception in the T.K. Young Room will follow the service.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to the Children's Foundation of Memphis, the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, or a .
