Martha Weintraub Brenner Obituary
Martha Weintraub Brenner

Memphis, TN

Martha Weintraub Brenner passed away at home at the Village of Germantown on September 4, 2017 after a GLORIOUS 99 years of life. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey on January 24, 1918, she met and married her prince charming, Milton Brenner, and shortly thereafter moved to Memphis. She often remarked that moving to Memphis was the smartest thing they ever did as they were embraced by people of all backgrounds. Her life was not boring. Martha and Milton not only built a business together, but more importantly, they also built a family and a lifetime of memories that few could rival. The "movie star" couple started the regional Casual Corner chain in 1958. Together they provided many Memphians their first work experience and enabled the women of Memphis to dress like the women of New York. They worked hard but Martha ensured they played hard. Mom, Grandma, Grandmama could be counted on to find time for a game of golf, a weekend boating on the Mississippi with her river rat friends or simply indulging in happy hour with her favorite Dewars and Soda.

Martha loved people. She talked to everybody she met and didn't know a stranger. She was even once observed talking to a statue at a wax museum in London. She not only talked but she listened, endearing herself to all she met. The last few years she built great relationships with her care takers at the Village. Her greatest joy was holding court as Matriarch of the Brenner Clan. She took great pride in her three daughters, Felice Rosenthal Bauman, Suellen Blen and Jeri Israel. She treated their husbands, Charlie, Sonny, Bernie and Allen as if they were her own children and cherished every moment spent with her seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Martha was preceded in death by her beloved Milton Brenner, her husband of 55 years; her daughter, Suellen Blen, and her son-in-law, Charles Rosenthal.

Her family includes Felice (Sonny) Bauman, Jeri(Allen) Israel, Bernard Blen, grandchildren David (Debbie) Rosenthal, Trevor Rosenthal, Elisa (Brad) Cohen, Brian Israel, Amy (John) Israel Pregulman, Scott (Alison) Blen, and Michael (Marcy) Blen. great-grandchildren, Samantha Rosenthal, Emily Rosenthal, Miriam Israel, Abigail Israel, Jonathan Israel, Elliot Slovis, Daniel Slovis, Lauren Cohen, Allie Cohen, Max Blen, Sydney Ellen Blen, Stella Blen, Sarah Blen, and Steve Blen.

Funeral Services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, September 7 in the Levy-Cooper Chapel at Temple Israel Cemetery, 1708 Hernando Road.

In lieu of flowers, any memorials should be sent to Temple Israel or the .
