Mary Lou Pickens Coughlan

Ripley, TN

Mary Lou Pickens Coughlan, 84, of Ripley, TN, formerly of Memphis, took the first steps on her journey to heaven February 14, 2017 after battling myelodysplasia. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, February 16th at Garner Funeral Home, 301 Lake Drive, Ripley, TN. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 17th at Garner Funeral Home with interment to follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Henning, TN.

A long-time member of First Baptist Church in Ripley, Mary Lou loved the Lord, her family, friends and fur babies. She was never happier than with her children in the room, a friend on the phone and a dog on her lap. She was also a pioneer for women in the work place, spending 10 years at ATT as a long distance operator before starting her family. She later became the first female sales manager for Curtis Industries (Hillman Fasteners) and spent 23 years winning every major sales award before her retirement.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Dan Coughlan, parents Marlin Pickens and Ethel Grantham Pickens, siblings Dorothy Duncan, Hershel Birdsong and Johnny Garrett. She is survived by her daughter Danette Coughlan of Evansville, IN, son Greg Coughlan of Ripley, TN, bonus daughter Tanya Evans of Evansville, IN, sister Ruth LeMay of Waller, TX, several nieces and nephews, a large extended family of friends and her canine companion of the last year, Gretchen.

The family wishes to thank Dr. William Walsh, his office staff, and all of the caregivers at Baptist Hospital in Memphis who worked so hard on her behalf. Special thanks to Caris Hospice for making it possible for her to spend the last days at home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Lauderdale County Humane Society or .
