Mother Maryland Gholson

March 25, 1930 - August 13, 2016

God called home His faithful servant, Maryland Gholson, on August 13, 2016 due to natural causes. She confessed Christ at an early age and lived a long life of prayer and fortitude. As an 86 year-old, sister, mother, grandmother, and community activist, her life was a testament to the awesome power of God.

Mother Gholson was born March 25, 1930 to Maryland Strickland and Curtis Ayers. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert Gholson, Sr.; her sisters Margie A. Wilson and Mae Willie McLin; brother Godfrey McNamee; son James Gholson (Louise); daughters Deborah Gholson, Curtis Mabry (Johnny), and Cheryl Stribling-Ward; and granddaughter Felicia Irby Townsend. She is survived by her sister Curtis Louise Chatman; sons Robert L. Gholson, Jr. (Exalia), Michael Gholson (Joann), Reginald Gholson (Tina); and daughter Charlesetta Rolack (Lee). Mother Gholson leaves her footprint on the hearts of her many grandchildren: Lana Lasandra, Keisha Gholson, Riesha Gholson, Stefan Gholson, Michael Gholson, Jr., Candi Gholson, Marisa Gholson, Maya Gholson, Jerome Smith, Domonique Gholson, Rashada Gholson, Chanel Gholson, Dr. Adeirdre Stribling Riley (Malcom), Bilan Stribling, Admiral Stribling, Phillip Stribling, Monaca Gholson, Ma'Linda Rolack, Mario Rolack and Michael Rolack, Jr. She will also be missed by her many great-grandchildren, surrogate children, other relatives and friends.

For 33 years, Mother Gholson was a dedicated Environmental Specialist at the Regional Medical Center. Upon her retirement, she continued working at the Memphis Public Library and the Memphis Food Bank. She was a long-time member of Central Baptist Church and Believers in Faith Missionary Baptist Church, where she proudly served on the Mother Board. She was a member of The Order of Eastern Star. Mother Gholson was an expert chef who was well known for her culinary gifts. She enjoyed traveling and had several domestic and international trips planned.

Above all, Mother Gholson was a steadfast leader and unwavering in her prayerful approach to concerns, confessing that God is in control. There is no doubt many lives will be impacted and mourn our loss. Her strength was iron clad and her commitment to the Lord was everlasting. Indeed, those who truly knew Mother Gholson, you are well aware she has transcended into heaven. Praise the Lord.

Mother Gholson was interred on August 20, 2016, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38119.
