Maxine Campbell Underwood Obituary
Maxine Campbell Underwood

Memphis, TN

Maxine Campbell Underwood, 97, passed away peacefully January 30, 2017 after a long and active life. She was preceded in death by her husband George of 65 years and their son James Underwood. She is survived by son David Underwood (JoAnn), Daughter-in-law Patricia Underwood, two granddaughters Leslie Rayfield (John) and Lee Cole, and seven great-grandchildren, James Rayfield, Nate Rayfield, Caroline Rayfield, Katie Cole, Miller Cole, McKenzie Cole and Jay Cole.

Maxine was daughter of Maggie and Patrick Campbell, born July 13, 1919 in Horn Lake, Mississippi. She began working at the Fisher Aircraft Plant during WWII and then became a dedicated mother, raising her two sons. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Maxine worked at the Memphis Funeral Home for 18 years as a receptionist and hair stylist. She loved her time there and made life-long friends. Maxine's greatest passions were interior design and cooking. Her beautiful home was a treasure to her and she loved to decorate it and help others with theirs. She was always the most gracious host with her house in impeccable order and her delicious meals, especially known for her one-of-a-kind strawberry cake, banana pudding and pound cake. Her love of flowers showed each year in her beautiful yard. But her greatest joy in life was her family, always the most loving and generous mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Her great-grandchildren brought her so much joy in her later years. The family wants to express their gratitude to her loving nephew, Robert Campbell, and her neighbors who were always looking after her. Our beloved Mother, Granny and GiGi gave us her legacy of a life well lived. This precious gift is a loving memory that our grateful hearts will treasure always.

Visitation will be held at the Memphis Funeral Home on Poplar, Friday, February 3rd at 1:00 pm and service will immediately follow at 2:00 pm. A private interment will be held after the funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made to the and Edmondson Chapel Cemetery.
