Dr. Melvin D. Wade

Memphis, TN

Dr. Melvin D. Wade passed away on March 2, 2017. Dr. Wade was 74 years old. He was a devoted husband of 46 years to Geraldine C. Wade. Dr. Wade retired from the Memphis City Schools System.

Dr. Wade graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and Jacksonville Theological Seminary (Summa Cum Laude). He also attended Memphis State University. Dr. Wade was the Pastor of Christian Chapel Baptist Church, Grand Chaplain and a Volunteer Chaplain for the Sheriff's Department. He was Past Worshipful Master of Douglass Lodge #360.

Dr. Wade enjoyed gardening at home and at Christian Chapel Baptist Church. He always welcomed the people in the community to the garden to share the fruits of his Labor. Dr. Wade was the founder of the Christian Chapel Learning Center and Bus Charter Services. After Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Wade volunteered his time and energy to drive his bus to New Orleans. He transported numerous people to Memphis in order for them to begin a new life. Dr. Wade impacted so many people everywhere. He always willingly went the extra mile for his friends and those in need.

Dr. Wade was a political activist. He participated in the successful campaigns of hundreds of past and present officials.

Dr. Wade leaves to cherish his precious memory, a devoted and loving wife, Geraldine C. Wade, a daughter, Melanie (Ryan) Simpson, a son, Melvin D. Wade, Jr. and two grandchildren, Ryan Simpson, Jr. and Melvin D. Wade III. He leaves four sisters, Jackie (Percy) Day, Shirley (Jay) Crutcher, Marilyn (Keith) Yarbrough and Carolyn (Nate) Henderson; one sister (Sharon Winfield) preceded him in death; two brothers, Randy (Lynn) Wade and Curtis Wade.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Progressive Baptist Church (394 Vance Avenue) at 11:00 a.m.

Wake: Friday, March 10, 2017 at Christian Chapel Baptist Church (1005 Meagher Street) from 5:00-7:00 p.m., with a memorial service following from 7-8 p.m.
