Nicola Spencer-Barnes Allen Obituary
Nicola Spencer-Barnes Allen

Memphis, TN

Nicola Spencer-Barnes Allen of Memphis, Tennessee, stepped into our Lord's heavenly presence on February 22, 2017. Nicola was 59 years old and peacefully passed away after fighting pancreatic cancer for over three and a half years.

Nicola was born in Prestatyn, North Wales, and moved with her family to the Cayman Islands in 1969. She worked at the Turtle Farm as a teenager and loved scuba diving in her younger years. Before attending and graduating from the Servite Convent Boarding School in Jamaica, she lived as an exchange student in Costa Rica. After she graduated, she worked for the Cadastral Survey Agency in the Cayman Islands, and then moved to Memphis in 1977. In her latter years, Nicola enjoyed working at LOLA and then Southern Couture and attending Bible Study at her church.

Anyone who knew Nicola would attest that she was very clever and quick-witted and brought laughter to others, even in her final days. She also had an uncanny ability to give warmth and hospitality to those she met, and this natural gift reached out to so many people, regardless of nationality or age. Nicola also loved animals, especially her dogs, and would even escort any critter out of the house before doing them any harm.

She leaves behind and will be dearly missed by her husband, Richard ("Rick") Allen; her son, James Herbert ("Herbo") Humphreys, III (Alina); her daughter, Courtney Humphreys Rolls (David) of Andover, England; her step-daughter, Whitney P. Allen, Golden, CO; her grandchildren, Esme Rolls, Ottiley Rolls, Arabella Rolls and Ellie Rose Allen; her sister, Michelle Spencer-Barnes Dunavant (Bill) of Memphis, Tennessee; her sister, Peridot Maria Dunning (Jeremy) of Hatherden Farm, England; her brother Nigel Spencer-Barnes (Judy) of Boca Grande, Florida, and her nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon in the rotunda until her memorial service begins at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at Independent Presbyterian Church located at 4738 Walnut Grove Road in Memphis.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the West Clinic, the or the Humane Society for Animals.
