Philip Schmidt fought a long and courageous battle against cancer and passed away peacefully Thursday, June 1, 2017. He was preceded in death by his mother, Anne, and father, Karl. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jean; son, Steven; daughter, Caroline; and five siblings: Glenn, Alan, Kathleen, Howard and Christine, all of whom he loved dearly. Phil was ordained into the Lutheran Church as a pastor in 1968 and faithfully served several parishes to include: Milwaukee, WI, Houston, TX, Memphis, TN, Jackson, TN and Hernando, MS. He was trained in Clinical Pastoral Education and served as a hospital chaplain in Cleveland, OH as well as chaplain and volunteer coordinator at Juvenile Court in Memphis for almost 30 years. Phil was gifted in carpentry, mechanical repairs and fine woodworking. He used these skills in every work experience, countless projects for church, friends, family and Habitat for Humanity. He eventually began making handmade wooden kitchen utensils and was a demonstrator for almost 15 years at the Pink Palace Craft Show. Phil had an authentic and genuine appreciation for life. He was a kind man of God and will be remembered as a faithful husband, loving father and a true friend. A Celebration of Life service will be held this Wednesday, June 7 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 210 Washington, at 7 p.m. with visitation beginning at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be sent to Trinity Lutheran Church or a .
