Phillip Brian "Phil" Pilcher Obituary
Phillip Brian Pilcher

Lakeland, TN

Phil Pilcher of Lakeland, TN passed away on January 14, 2017 at Baptist Hospital after a short illness. He was born near Water Valley, MS on April 9, 1941 to parents Wesley and Ruby Pilcher. His parents and his four brothers, Wesley, Kenneth, Wayne and Sam (his best friend) along with his sister, Dorothy Tatum all predeceased him. His oldest sister, June Vanlandingham, lives in Mississippi and his youngest sister, Ruth Masters, lives in Arizona. He was devoted to his wife, Mitzi and his children and grandchildren. In addition to Mitzi, he leaves behind his daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Les Loeffel and their two daughters, Kelsey and Marisa, and his youngest daughter and son-in-law, Peri and Mont Winfrey and their children Nicholas and Laura.

His parents left Mississippi when Phil was in elementary school and moved to Tucson, AZ. After he graduated from high school in Tucson he decided to join the military and came to Memphis to visit some of his family members. He changed his mind about the military and decided to stay in Memphis. He eventually went to work at Bauer Auto Parts. He enjoyed the job but wanted something more. He went to work for S.C. Toof & Company and serviced equipment for them and eventually ended up in sales. He loved selling and said that taking a Dale Carnegie course was one of the best things he could have done. He and a close friend opened P & H Electronics in 1972 and began selling office machinery. His partner in the business later sold his portion of the business to Phil and sometime later Phil decided to start selling business telephone equipment using the name P & H Telecom. He eventually sold his office machine inventory and telephone sales and repair became his primary business.

Phil had a passion for the study of wine and wine tasting. He also had a passion for cars and he worked diligently to expand the local SCCA, especially in Rallying. He was instrumental in bringing divisional and National Rallies to the Mid-South. He was also known for the Memphis Pro Rallying Group.

Phil retired in 2006 and never looked back. He became active in Lakeland, serving as Chairman of Partnership Lakeland as well as serving on the Economic Development Commission for a while. He was later appointed to the Lakeland Municipal Planning Commission and was proud to serve Lakeland in any capacity.

A memorial service is planned for January 28 at 6:00 p.m. at the Refuge Church in Lakeland. For those who have asked how to honor Phil in some way we would suggest a donation to the City of Lakeland, Parks & Recreation Dept., 10001 Hwy. 70, Lakeland, TN 38002 and specify "for the stage venue in memory of Phil Pilcher".
