Richard Burks Robbins Obituary
Richard Burks Robbins

Memphis, TN

Richard Burks Robbins, 63, beloved husband, father, brother and friend, lost his hard-fought battle against cancer on April 15, 2017.

Richard leaves a large, extended family who cherish his memory and celebrate his life, including his wife of 23 years, Amanda, and two children, Laura and Sam, all of Memphis; his brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Sheryll Robbins of Monument, CO; and his sister, Jane Thomas, of Owasso, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents, Burks and Penny Robbins.

Richard spent most of his professional life as a journalist, first as a reporter at newspapers in Arkansas and Oklahoma, then later as a print designer and graphic artist and illustrator for almost 30 years at The Commercial Appeal in Memphis. Although quiet in nature and gentle in spirit, Richard was an ardent believer in the need for a free and independent press and devoted his career to providing clarity and understanding of each day's news events.

A humble man, Richard was a talented, self-taught artist who never thought his work was good enough, even when it was eagerly sought by family, friends and colleagues. He was a thoughtful and insightful writer, whose handwritten notes were treasures of love and self-deprecating humor. He also enjoyed all kinds of music, danced poorly but enthusiastically, read voraciously, and loved a good thunderstorm, especially when ensconced with a glass of bourbon on the front porch of his Midtown home.

And Richard adored his family. He was a magical father who could turn any road trip to visit relatives and friends into an adventure, create amazing stories in chalk on a sidewalk and chase raindrops and rainbows with his children during a spring rain. He was a true partner and best friend who tried to share the best of himself every day with those he loved.

We love you, Richard. More.

Richard's family will have an open house at their home from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 22, to welcome friends to celebrate his life. Please make any donations to , 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
