Robert Doyle Cox of Germantown, Tennessee, or R.D. as his wife often called him, passed away Sunday morning September 24, 2017. He was born in Vian, Oklahoma September 22, 1926 to Garland. G. Cox and Callie Brackett Cox. He enlisted in the Army in 1944 and was stationed in the Philippines. Mr. Cox studied law at Oklahoma University and began practicing law in Oklahoma. He was recalled by the army to serve in the JAG core in 1952. After being honorably discharged he attended Duke University and earned his Master of Laws degree. He began working at Eastman Kodak in Kingsport, TN where he met his future wife, Mary Ann Tabor. They married in 1955 and moved to Oklahoma where he taught law at Oklahoma University. He was hired as the Dean of the new Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at Memphis State University in 1962. Mr. Cox was Dean from 1962-1977. After retiring as dean, Mr. Cox continued teaching at the law school for many years. Mr. Cox enjoyed playing the piano, gardening, sailing , and spending time at Greers Ferry lake with his wife and his dogs. He is survived by his wife of 62 years and many nieces and nephews. His family greatly appreciates the excellent care he received while living at The Village of Germantown and all they did to elevate his quality of life. The visitation will be on Monday, October 2 at 9 a.m. and the Funeral at 10 a.m. at Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to The Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law or to the Bill Graham Foundation.
