As a World War II Navy veteran, he was a proud member of the Greatest Generation who served his country with distinction at the Battle of Okinawa. He was a master of many trades including farming, roofing, and brick laying who finally settled on a career at Commercial Barge Lines (later changed to Commercial Carriers) until retirement some thirty-three years later. As someone who always enjoyed work, he spent his retirement years working in his yard and garden. Anyone who knew him would long remember his laugh, his wonderful bright smile, his generosity to those in need, and his adoption of many stray cats and dogs. Those acquainted with him would say he was the most kind-hearted individual they ever met and who was fond of saying and living by these words: You have to be willing to forgive if you want to be forgiven. May God bless and safely keep him in his last journey to eternity. Visitation will occur from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday evening, January 20 at Forest Hill Funeral Home South on Holmes Road with a celebration of life service also at Forest Hill at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County.
