Born in San Diego, California on January 6, 1954 to the late Robert Newton and Lynda Zack Wasson McKinley Ollerton. Rusty was the child of a military family and lived all over the world with family roots in Kosciusko, Mississippi.

He was a graduate of Guam High School and went on to attend the University of Southern Mississippi where he received his undergraduate and Master's degrees. Rusty met his wife, Sharon "Sherry" Jo Messer at USM while they were cheerleading partners. He taught at Memphis State University where he also coached the cheerleading squad. He lead several squads to the Cheerleading National Championships, two of which won in 1981 and 1982.

Rusty was a faithful Christian, husband, beloved father, and grandfather. He was a charter member of Grace Evangelical Church in Germantown, Tennessee and now a member of First Presbyterian Church of Baton Rouge. He will be remembered for his many dedicated years in the Boy Scout, cheerleading, financial and church communities. He was a hard working family man with a lot of knowledge to share with all that crossed his path.

He is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Sherry; children, Kelcie McKinley Phillips (Jason), Robert Ryan McKinley (Lindsey), and Caitlyn Christine McKinley, brother, Timothy McKinley of San Diego; seven grandchildren, McKinley Grace Phillips, Annie Elisabeth Phillips, Chloe Jean McKinley, Sophie Marie McKinley, Robert Hollis McKinley, Waverly Ann McKinley, and Thomas Rowan McKinley. The family will receive guests Monday, May 1, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church of Baton Rouge for visitation at 10:30 a.m. with a Memorial Service to follow at noon.
