Roy J. McElwain Obituary
Roy J. McElwain

Memphis, TN

Roy Junior McElwain passed from this life on March 25, 2017, just before his 77th birthday. Although he lived a quiet life over the last two decades, Roy was well known in the Memphis community for his years as the radio personality "Roy Mack" on WMPS and WHBQ. His unforgettable voice and creative "bits" made him one of the most endearing local DJ talents of the 1960s and 70s-when AM radio ruled in Memphis.

Roy enjoyed another noteworthy success in the music realm when he managed a young Memphis band called The Devilles in the 1960s, guiding them through an evolution to eventually become The Box Tops-a band that gained world renown with their chart-topping single, "The Letter." This experience forged a career in music and radio that would span four decades. From talent promotion to live radio and even a stint as a country music publisher, Roy was blessed to explore and succeed in numerous facets of an industry that he loved.

To many, Roy was known for his big voice and even bigger ideas when it came to the world of radio and music. But Roy was also a husband, father, brother and friend whose colorful take on life will be missed. Roy is survived by sons, Mark McElwain of Walls, MS; Marlin McElwain (Renae) of Arlington, TN; stepson Jim Holmes of Atlanta, GA; stepdaughter Patty Holmes of Buford, GA and grandchildren Zachary McElwain, Patrick McElwain, Claire McElwain and Matthew McElwain of Memphis and Jeff Davis of Horn Lake, MS. He also leaves behind sisters Jamie Weigandt of Hernando, MS and Nadine Roberts of Horn Lake, MS. Roy was preceded in death by his wife Sandra Hufstedler McElwain, stepson John Holmes of Buford, GA, and parents Roy and Jennie Rutherford McElwain of Memphis.

A memorial service for Roy McElwain will take place Monday, April 10 at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church (6325 Raleigh Lagrange Road, Memphis 38134). Roy will be laid to rest at a private ceremony in Pocahontas, AR.
